Qualification Purpose

The purpose of the qualification is for learners to attain the knowledge and practical competences required to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations. The objectives of the qualification include supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning.

This qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, after which learners will need to repeat the qualification. However, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements however learners should have a minimum of level two in literacy and numeracy or equivalent. The qualification is suitable for learners aged 14 years and above.

This award is a blended learning qualification. This means that 50% of the qualification is made up from theory elements completed online in advance of a 6 hour practical classroom session.

Learners must complete the online course before attending the classroom sessions.

  • 2. The Scene Assessment
  • 3. Provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
  • 4. Recognise and manage a choking casualty
  • 5. Provide first aid to a casualty with major bleeding
  • 6. Know how to provide first aid to a child who is in shock
  • 7. Provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries.
  • Unit 2
  • 1. Be able to conduct a secondary survey (incomplete)
  • 2. Provide first aid to bone, joint and muscle injury (clone)
  • 3. Provide first aid to a child with a suspected head/spine injury
  • 4. Provide first aid to a casualty with eye, ear or nose injury
  • 5. Administer first aid to an acute medical condition or sudden illness
  • 6. Administer first aid to a child suffering from the effects of hot and cold.
  • 7. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  • 8. Know how to provide first aid to a child with sudden poisoning
  • 9. Know how to provide first aid to a child with Anaphylaxis
